Should you rent or buy a power generator?

A power generator is a type of portable generator that provides an extra source of power when you need it. This offers power whether you are in a remote location and in need of electricity or your power in your business has gone out and you need to have electricity until the power company turns it back on. You can either rent or buy the generator, depending on your budget and needs. Here are some things to consider when deciding if renting or buying is best.

Rent the Generator if You Only Need it Temporarily

If you don't really need the portable generator on your premises at all times, but just temporarily for a special event, renting it is probably a better option. That way, you are only paying for the generator when you need to use it and not making an extra purchase for a 'just in case' scenario. For example, your business might be attending a local trade show where electricity isn't available. If you want to hook up lighting or electrical devices, you can rent a generator for this purpose, then return it when the event is over.

Buy the Generator if You Also Want Power Backup

One of the main reasons to buy a generator is if you want access to it at all times. If the power goes out, calling up a rental company to rent one can be inconvenient. Not to mention the fact that if it is a large power outage, other businesses might beat you to it. You should consider buying the generator if having backup power for your building is important to you and you are willing to pay for the chance at never losing electricity in its entirety. If you have a business where having no power could mean losing a lot of money, such as if you run a restaurant and don't want any food to spoil, it is probably good to buy the generator.

Rent the Generator if You Don't Have Anywhere to Store it

Power generators might be small, but you do need a good place to store it. You can't keep the generator inside your building or any attached buildings, as this becomes a safety hazard. It needs to be stored in a dry place on-site, but in a detached building, such as a shed or detached garage. If you don't think you have a good place to keep the generator when it isn't in use, you might be better off just renting it when you need it.

Buy the Generator if it is in Your Budget

Even if you don't necessarily have a need for the generator all the time, buying it can be a good option. This makes it an investment and allows you to have backup power whenever you need it. Buying the generator also ensures that you aren't competing against others to rent generators when they are high in demand.
